Working with wood is both challenging and rewarding. Each species of wood has its own particular characteristics and aesthetic attributes. It is imperative for the wood artist to be familiar with these traits. He must know the strengths and weaknesses of each wood and how to best use them to the advantage of his work. However, this is just the beginning. Kimchi’s experienced eye checks each plank for color, grain and texture as he strives to achieve an interesting and harmonious composition in everything he makes, be it wood art or custom furniture.
Once he has chosen the boards to be worked, Kimchi cuts them to size, joints and planes them. The workshop is thus permeated with the unique scent of each species of wood. This is always an enjoyable experience, signalling the happy commencement of a new project. As each piece of wood is planed, the hidden beauty of the figure is revealed. Kimchi never ceases to derive pleasure from these subtle discoveries.
“I feel privileged to be able to work in these marvelous materials. My goal is to preserve their natural beauty while transforming them into pieces that will provide enduring pleasure.”
