This “Memphis” style inspired piece adds a touch of playfulness to the game. Each player is equipped with a small, dovetailed drawer to house his chess pieces. Small touches, such as the inlaid butterfly joints on the top, and the padouk tips at the bottom of the legs, serve to round out the composition.
Dimensions: 140 cm x 90 cm x 45 cm high
Materials: African walnut
This coffee table is a variation on the theme of the Desert Canyon Sculpted Coffee Table. In this case the emphasis was placed on creating a whole (the oval form) and then cutting negative spaces into it. Upon observation Kimchi later discovered that the negative cut-outs, which were intended for the wood stove, actually had potential to become a dynamic sculpture in their own right. Here the coffee table can be seen both on its own and together with the negative cut-out sculpture.
Dimensions: 150 cm x90 cm x 45 cm high
Materials: Mahogany and 19 mm thick glass
This fluid-lined piece was created by stack-laminating layers of mahogany pre-cut to rough shape. The block was then sculpted to final form and finely sanded. The protruding tips were then carefully removed, and threaded screws were inserted, passing through the glass. The glass top is thus securely fixed in place, allowing peace of mind when children or grandchildren are about.

Kimchi revisits classic Moroccan design and derives his own variation on a theme, in keeping with his signature flowing lines.
Dimensions: 150 cm x 40 cm x 90 cm high

The inspiration for this sculpted coffee table came to Kimchi from a family camping trip in the wilds of Utah, U.S.A. Images of the amazing and awe inspiring rock formations he saw there in Arches National Park remained implanted in him and eventually gave birth to this wood art creation.
Dimensions: approx. 45 cm x 30 cm x 40 cm high
Materials: Spalted mapa burl with walnut base
“The form here emerged almost of its own from a massive log of mapa burl I had been saving for years. Initially, as I began sculpting I had no preconceptions, yet gradually the bird began to take shape. The texture of the wood is shown off beautifully in the curvature of the wings.”
- Kimchi
Dimensions: 65 cm x 30 cm x 55 cm high
Materials: African walnut
These two flowing forms that appear to be in perfect harmony with each other are actually the cut-outs from the oval form in the base of the Negative Space Coffee Table. This is a wonderful example of how an artist can allow himself to be surprised by what emerges from his work. Through a process of observation and trial and error, often completely unexpected and pleasing results are obtained.
Dimensions: 220 cm x 85 cm x 75 cm high
Materials: Bubinga with wenge base and maple accents
This massive desk, shown in rear view, is the centerpiece in the home office of a high-tech company owner. This massive desk adorns the president’s office at the head of an American multi-hotel firm. The sloped uprights allow for a strong sense of drama in the design, while imparting an open, airy feeling. The drawer pulls are crafted as an integral part of the carving.
Dimensions: 140 cm x 40 cm x 100 cm high

The base of this piece was created by first stack-laminating slabs of mahogany, then carefully sculpting out the opening and chisle-texturing the inner surfaces, later stained black for drama. The top also has a notched out “hatching crack” on the left. This shape metamorphosizes into a lightening bolt wenge inlay.

This bimah is only part of a major renovation I designed and executed for an old synagogue. The main motif – which appears on the aron kodesh – is of the tablets on Mount Sinai. Surrounding the bimah is a sculpted railing attached to the existing raised stone structure. The bimah is equipped with an upholstered bench to seat three worshippers. The reading table has a drawer and storage beneath. All handles are integral parts of the carving.
Dimensions: 90 cm X 32 cm X 78 cm high
Materials: Mahogany, lacewood, wenge wood
This is a rather quiet version of the “Leaping Gazelle Hall Table” of which kimchi has made several variations. Normally Kimchi’s gazelles are alive with asymmetric tension, whereas here he has created a contemplative animal in repose. The legs are unusually delicate at the bottom tip, and neatly capped with wenge at the top. The two swaths of lacewood inlayed in the top are bordered on each side by a thin strip of inlayed wenge which adds a touch of definition and refinement.
Dimensions: 65 cm x 65 cm x 60 cm high

Dimensions: 110 cm x 32 cm x 90 cm high
Materials: Maple and applewood
This is the latest in a series of hall tables I’ve made along this theme. I enjoy exploring the potential of animalistic forms, especially the sense of tension that can be felt here, as if the table is about to make a leap. The floating top adds a magical aura to the piece.
Dimensions: 82 cm x 58 cm x 6 cm high
Materials: Mahogany wood
Kimchi’s love of Art Nouveau imagery was the inspiration behind this sculpted wall hanging. The intertwining of human forms with vegetation has been a recurring theme in much of his work over the years. In this piece of wall art Kimchi strove to achieve the perfect harmony between the figurative and the suggestive. One can expect to see more along these lines in the future as Kimchi continues to explore this delicate balance in wood art.
Dimensions: 160 cm x 45 cm x 100 cm high

This pieces derives it overall inspiration from the aesthetics of the Far East. The crisply delineated wing tips of the top visually augment the upward sweep of the legs. Fine detailing can be seen on the handles and the top inlay.
Dimensions: 120 cm x 35 cm x 80 cm high
Materials: Mapa burl, wenge and bubinga
This piece juxtaposes the clean-lined, black wenge of the uprights with the wild grain and untamed shape of the light-colored mapa top. The bubinga panels soften the transition between the two, both in tone and in texture.
Dimensions: 85 cm x 45 cm x 80 cm high
Materials: Bookmatched walnut crotch and walnut
The concept for this piece came about while studying an amazing pair of bookmatched walnut boards. The spiderlike shape emerged as I developed the design from the top down. The two sets of aprons were created by laminating strips of walnut and gluing them together in two specially made molds.
Dimensions: 160 cm x 40 cm x 90 cm high

This table is an ode to fine joinery. The top is given a prominent lift, resting upon four octagonalized pegs which take their cue from the shape of the legs. The legs are lap jointed onto the aprons and fixed with minute octagonal maple pegs.

Designed to accompany a vanity table, this chair affords both a comfortable seating and a sense of fantasy.
Dimensions: 55 cm x 55 cm x 93 cm high
Materials: Mahogany, imported leather
These custom designed dining chairs are a classic example of Kimchi’s design hierarchy theory. The dining table, with its massive proportions, wild, lustrous veneered top and richly carved uprights, sets the tone for the more subdued chairs which accompany it. Together they comprise a harmonious, hand-crafted dining set, each component of which speaks the same language, but in slightly different dialects. Before commencing work on the chairs themselves Kimchi presented the clients with a full-scale mock-up of the chair to adjust for maximum comfort.

On occasion, Kimchi is called upon to create a piece of fantasy furniture. This small side table appears to have sprouted up over night from a rich, loamy forest floor. One can easily see that Kimchi thoroughly enjoyed crafting this piece of wood art.

This corporate office has as its centerpiece a massive and finely detailed conference table commissioned from Kimchi. There was an additional need for a bit of closed storage conveniently located near by. Kimchi worked with the company’s architect to create a custom designed unit that would match the client’s needs and add another touch of refinement. The drawer handles offered an opportunity to reflect the inlay detail in the conference table.

Dimensions: 60 cm x 50 cm x 120 cm high
Materials: One solid log of mapa burl
I had been seasoning this excellent section of mapa burl for about two years, deliberating what to make from it. When the moment finally came to cut into the wood I realized that a throne-not just a chair-was what beckoned to be released. This piece displays both spiraled carving and gently softened bits of natural burl which were left in strategic spots.
Dimensions: 60 cm x 55 cm x 100 cm high
Materials: Bubinga, wenge and maple
Designed as part of a whole dining set, these chairs took their cue from the massive table. The ten side chairs are accompanied by a slightly taller arm chair at either end. The seats are hand-sculpted to afford both a comfortable sitting and add an attractive element which enhances the design.

This chest was designed to be used for a woman’s intimate clothing. The bas-relief carving was created separately, then carefully sliced into appropriate sections which were then applied to the fronts of the drawers. The style of the piece is what Kimchi refers to as “neo-primitivism”.
“This is definitely a direction which I intend to explore further.”
- Kimchi
Dimensions: 200 cm x 52 cm x 110 cm high
Materials: Bubinga, wenge and maple
The powerfully graphic design of this piece was augmented by the choice of woods and the use thereof. The solid bubinga planks for the doors were chosen for the linearity of their grain. They were then cut on a slant to emphasize the angularity of the piece. The dark wenge base rises up towards the center where it is punctured by the downward thrust of the maple drawer column. To all of this is added an intricate inlay motif on the top. The angled swath of inlayed wood changes from maple to buninga and then back again as it traverses the sections of the cabinet.
Dimensions: 220 cm x 45 cm x 230 cm high (entire composition)
Materials: Cherry, maple and purple heart
These pieces were technically quite challenging to construct. The wavy walls were created in specially made laminating jigs. Getting all the pieces to meet properly was a good exercise in geometry. The drawers have finger pulls incorporated into the carved motif. Ideal spacing between the two cabinets is determined by the inlay on the drawer fronts.
Dimensions: 280 cm x 52 cm x 230 cm high
Materials: Maple and bubinga
The client who ordered this piece was looking for something at once ordered and unusual. Despite being entirely symmetrical, this unit has a sense of playfulness and movement that is anything but run of the mill. The drawer pulls and door handles in the center sections were created by cutting shapes out of the maple fronts and attaching a contrasting bubinga backing.

This cabinet offers a set of drawers of staggered depths to house various types of clothing and personal items. Materials: Unidentified, extremely dense log-ebonized, wenge base
“I discovered, one day, a small log that had been seasoning in a dark corner of the workshop. It seemed to lend itself beautifully to being a female torso. Originally I thought it to be some kind of fruit tree. However, upon digging in deeper I was surprised by the extreme hardness of the wood, a fact which allowed for very sharp detailing. Upon completion the piece was dyed black to give it a more mysterious aura.”
- Kimchi
Dimensions: 35 cm x 28 cm 60 cm high

Having read descriptions of Michelangelo’s creative genious, Kimchi sculpted this couple in hommage to the Rennaisssance master’s “Atlas Slave”. In a similar fashion to his predecessor, Kimchi began working the block and “allowed” the human forms to metamorphose as if on their own.
Dimensions: 165 cm x 35 cm x 210 cm high

The unusual wave of the ceiling in this abode called for an exceptional design to complement the architecture. This piece, which clearly derives its inspiration from the Art Nouveau stile, rises to the challange. The tall narrow open section is actually the paneling for a space running through the wall to the other side, which is adorned with a sculpted frame and molding as well.
Dimensions: 265 cm X 120 cm X 75 cm high (Extends to length of 415 cm)
Materials: Mahogany, mahogany crotch veneer, wenge wood
This regal dining table was designed to be positioned with the end facing the entrance of the home. The clients envisioned placing chairs only along the sides and making the ends the focal point of attention. They also had a strong desire to give homage to the concept of sheaves of wheat – representing man’s connection to the earth and implying thankfulness for its bounty. Kimchi had a wonderful time carving this motif into the custom made dining table. The vibrantly textured crotch veneer was hand picked together with the client. This piece of wood art is only one part of an entire set of custom designed dining furniture that was commissioned from Kimchi.

In 1962 Irby Cooper together with his father, purchased their first franchise in the hotel business. Since that time the business, which was later named Cooper Companies, has grown into a veritable empire of quality hotels. Irby was well known both in the hotel field as an exemplary business man of upstanding character, and in his community (Memphis, Tennessee) and as a charitable individual. In addition to this, he was a strong supporter of the arts and took pains to incorporate fine original artworks in the public spaces of his hotels.
Irby passed away in the year 2000, and the company is now run by his children who continue to expand upon his legacy. The company today owns over two dozen fine hotels throughout the eastern United States.
This triangular monolith was commissioned by Irby’s children and now stands in the lobby of the Double Tree Hotel in Memphis. The piece was designed to achieve several goals: First and foremost, one of the panels is dedicated to telling about Irby Cooper, the founder of the company. Second, the additional panels serve to provide information about the hotel’s facilities and upcoming events and attractions. Lastly, the piece adds a sense of drama and grandeur to the lobby area. In this fashion Irby’s legacy, both as a man and as an entrepreneur, continues to thrive and is made available to all who use the hotel. In addition to this piece Kimchi has created custom made furniture and sculptures for many other Cooper Company hotels.

Occasionally one comes across a client who really makes the artist look outside the box. This wall-hung aron kodesh is a case in point. The extreme bend of the contours in the form required use of challenging woodworking techniques. Neither was the sculpted front with the door cut into it a task for the weak of heart. In designing this ark Kimchi strove to create a piece that would invite the viewer to an ongoing dialogue. As one continues to observe the carving more and more birds come out of the woodwork.
Dimensions: 220 cm x 110 cm high

“This is only one out of a series of seven wall hangings I created depicting the biblical creation story. The sculptures were commissioned to adorn the walls of the banquet hall in a five star hotel in Florida. Here we view the culmination of the sixth day – the creation of man and woman.”
- Kimchi
Dimensions: 330 cm X 40 cm deep x 260 cm high

The impetus for this custom designed cabinet was three-fold: Firstly, it serves to hide the main plumbing pipes whose location was poorly planned. Secondly, it serves as a coat closet with additional space for storage. Finally, the piece creates a tailor-made nook for a large oil painting, and showcases it in a grand way. This is a classic example of how Kimchi can turn architectectural mishaps into great opportunities.

The clients who commissioned this set were enthusiasts of extremely minimalistic design with a great love of wood. An accompanying pair of low and high dressers was also created to complete the set.

This aron kodesh was commissioned by the Ritz Carlton hotel in Herziliya Pitouach, Israel. This ark is intended to serve the smaller synagogue for daily worship, while the “Scenes of Jerusalem Ark” he made is used in the larger hall for special occasions. This aron kodesh, being located in a rather confined space, needed to be compact, bright and cheerful. By implementing some of his trade mark positive/negative space design and using mainly a light-toned maple, kimchi was able to keep this synagogue furniture piece both practical and light.

Coffee table: 240 cm x 70 cm x 40 cm high

The drama of this solid wood coffee table stems from the sheer audacity of its scale. Kimchi’s sculpted wall hangings and carved mirrors generally tend more towards the semi-abstract. However, the very special client who ordered this piece desired something sweet and delicate to adorn her bedroom, something very specific. She knew she wanted a rose. Kimchi set out to create a piece of wood art that complied with the client’s request for the particular and yet still had that typical sense of flow that usually characterizes his work.

Structural requirements created indented niches along the corridor of a corporate office building. In a typical example of Kimchi’s creativity he turned these otherwise unused spaces into a showcase for some of the company’s publicity photos and emblems. Thanks to these two pieces of functional wood art the corridor has become one of the building’s attractions, adding an element of fine design and enhancing the walk to the coffee machine.

In addition to his principal occupation of creating wood art, Kimchi enjoys drawing and painting in various media. He also is an avid reader of art history. As this piece of wood art began to emerge, Kimchi realized that it seemed to suggest a close connection to the work of Samuel Bak, the painter. The theme here is the rising of the the people of Israel from a midst the wilderness. The desert mountains appear to be metamorphosing into the star of David.
